La tessitura e la tipologia dei Daghestan sono tra le pi˘ vecchie e popolari del Caucaso, ripetono gli stessi simboli e disegni di centinaia di anni fa. Molti di questi tappeti furono fatti a scopi religiosi e furono tramandati di generazione in generazione, per cui non si trovano facilmente in commercio. Il campo centrale, preferibilmente color avorio, Ë ricoperto con minuti disegni geometrici, quali losanghe, stelle, diamanti, in composizione regolare con un effetto trasversale dato dal particolare impianto a grata. The name signifies ìland of mountainsî. It is a province situated towards the east of the Caucasus, bound to the east by the Caspian Sea and to the north by the Russian steppe. This region is intersected by deep gorges and plateaux which provide good pasture for the herds. It is inhabited by the Lesghian, a patrician race divided into numerous clans. They overcame their differences under the national hero, Shamyl, who waged a lengthy war to shake off the Russian hold on their country. The weaving and typology of the Daghestan rugs are amongst the oldest and most widespread in the Caucasus, and the same designs and symbols are used today as hundreds of years ago. Many of these rugs were made for religious purposes and handed down from generation, and they are therefore not easy to find on the market.
The central filed is usually ivory-coloured and with minute geometric designs such as lozenges, star and diamonds laid out in regular compositions with a sideways effect created by the characteristic grating pattern. Thiny stylised figures are found over the niche in the prayer rugs.
The knotting is very fine and the colours are generally of delicate hue.
